October Events at Hillsborough County Public Library

“Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card,” as Arthur, from Arthur and Friends, would say. The folks over at Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative in Tampa, FL know that to be true. During the month of October, join the library for free informative and entertaining programs for the entire family.      

The events listed are only a sample of the first week of October, but there are a lot of activities that are scheduled. Remember to visit HCPLC.org, select a library location to view the library’s calendar events.

EVENTS:

Fitness Tracking

Date: Tuesday, October 1

Location: Bloomingdale Regional Public Library, 1906 Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico 

Time: 2 p.m.  

Attendees would be able to view wearable fitness trackers such as FitBit, standalone apps such as Google Fit and Apple Health; there will also be a smart scales that will track your weight, body composition, and BMI. For adults. 

Online Photo Editing

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3 

Location: Arthenia L. Joyner University Area Community Library, 13619 N. 22nd St.

Time: 2 pm

In the time of social media, photo editing is a must and it’s a great tool for small businesses as well. Participants will work with a free online photo editing sites and there’s no experience needed. This event is limited to 15 participants adult. register through the calendar feature at HCPLC.org

Cooking with Instant Pot

Date: Monday, Oct. 7

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Location: Lutz Branch Library, 101 W. Lutz-Lake Fern Road in Lutz

Chef Warren will be demonstrating the Instant Pot. Learn the pros and cons of this latest kitchen sensation and what are the best ways to use it in the table-for-two kitchen. For adults. The event is funded by the Friends over at the Lutz Branch Library.

Medicare Open Enrollment Period Education

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 8

Time: 4 p.m.

Location: Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library, 3910 S. Manhattan Ave.

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) gives confidential, free, and unbiased counseling to help attendees decide what is the best decision for them. This presentation will explain the changes that can be made during open enrollment and what you’ll be able to consider when making changes. For adults. It is presented in partnership with SHINE.

College Planning: Q&A with a Financial Planner

Date: Thursday, Oct. 10

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library, 3910 S. Manhattan Ave.

Certified Financial Planner Lori Nadglowsk will be on-location for a discussion of college savings options, Bright Futures Scholarships, the “real” cost of student loans, and how to select a college based on your budget. 

Tampa’s Untold History: Seminole Heights

Date: Saturday, Oct. 12 

Time: 1 p.m.

Location: Seminole Heights Branch Library, 4711 Central Ave.

Come and explore this fascinating history using the library resources. In 1905, Hillsborough County purchased a 128-acre farm that went from Hillsborough Avenue to Hanna Avenue, which was later known as the “County Poor Farm.” The working farm, as it was known, was staffed by the patients which were referred to as “inmates” since they harvested the citrus crops which were sold by the County. Those grounds also housed a buys’ detention home, a hospital, a nursing home, a tuberculosis sanitarium, and it was also a state isolation hospital. 

Youth Baking Contest

Date: Saturday, Oct. 12

Time: 11 a.m.  

Location: Lutz Branch Library, 101 W. Lutz-Lake Fern Road in Lutz

If you consider yourself a baker, this event could be the event for you. There are to two age groups that can enter into the competition: ages 5-10 and 11-17. Prizes for the competition are awarded to first, second, and third place winners. Drop off baked goods by 11 a.m. to be considered a possible winner. Check the library for contest rules and permission slips. This event is for children and teens. It’s funded by Friends over at Lutz Branch Library.
