This year, Florida had some of the lowest ACT scores nationwide.
The big picture: According to recently disclosed data from the nonprofit that administers the college admissions test, the class of 2023 had the lowest ACT performance nationwide in more than three decades, as reported by April Rubin of Axios.
Why it’s important: The results show that the COVID-19 pandemic is having an effect on schooling, since test scores and academic performance are falling across the board. The pandemic struck in the first year of high school for the 2023 cohort.
Zoom in: Florida’s average composite ACT score, which is derived from the state’s reading, science, math, and English section scores combined, was 18.9 out of 36, a significant decrease from 19.6 in 2014.
The average for last year was 19.
The ACT testing organization reported that almost 40 percent of seniors do not meet any of the college readiness requirements. The minimal scores needed to be expected to succeed in college courses are listed here.
According to a statement from Janet Godwin, CEO of ACT, average results have been falling for six years running.
“The hard truth is that we are not doing enough to ensure that graduates are truly ready for postsecondary success in college and career,” she stated.
Zoom out: Since the epidemic, test results for students of all ages have dropped to all-time lows.
In the meantime, there has been a three-year fall in college enrollment.
In response to declining enrolment, an increasing number of schools and universities have removed or made optional the requirement for standardized assessments.
