Currently, Ram Truck has four engine options available for the 2023 Ram 1500 pickup. However, automotive enthusiasts believe there is an inline twin-turbo six-cylinder Hurricane engine lurking to become the fifth option. The Hurricane engine is in talks to replace the outgoing 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine, whose fate is shaky due to looming emissions regulations. For now, Ram is staying hushed on whether the new engine can be expected to be part of the 2023 lineup or not. Here’s what Ram Truck is offering for the 2023 Ram 1500:
3.6-liter Pentastar V6
Dubbed the entry-level engine, the Pentastar V6 has been rumored to be on its last run for some time now. While it will stick around as the base engine for the upcoming year, the Pentastar V6 offers drivers 305 horsepower and up to 269 lb-ft of torque. To date, Stellantis has built over a million Pentastar engines, placing them beneath the hoods of Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge models as well. The Pentastar V6 gets 16.5 miles per gallon on average. Improved mileage numbers should drive consumers to opt for the base engine.
3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6
One of the few brands to keep a diesel engine in its lineup, Ram offers the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. Towing and mileage figures make the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel an amazing choice for those who need their truck to be a bonafide workhorse. Drivers can count on a whopping 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque thanks to the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel. With this engine configuration, Ram pickups like the Ram 1500 can show off best-in-class diesel towing capacity figures such as 12,650 pounds. While driving on the highway, the truck’s efficiency is 33 mpg. City mileage is 22 mpg.
5.7-liter HEMI V8
The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 has been used since the 2004 model year and is almost obsolete. In time, the Hurricane engine will take the place of the HEMI with comparable numbers, however, it will have more horsepower and better mileage. The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 will produce 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque for 2023. Ram Truck also uses this engine in conjunction with the eTorque mild hybrid system, which raises overall fuel efficiency. With this engine, two-wheel drive pickups can get fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, while four-wheel drive pickups can achieve 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the interstate.
6.4-liter Supercharged HEMI V8
The top option of the Ram Truck engine lineup is the 6.2-liter Supercharged HEMI V8. It exclusively powers the Ram 1500 TRX. Ram has not made any changes to the current engine, instead choosing to keep its 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque untouched. The blistering powertrain gives customers a 0 – 60 mph time of only 4.5 seconds. It isn’t unheard of, but the TRX is not really focused on towing–off-roading and performance are its forte.
