Possible severe flooding along the coast of Central Florida

Flooding of low regions along the beach will result from a combination of strong onshore winds and an above-average high tide. A coastal flood warning is in effect for the Volusia and Flagler coastlines through Tuesday AM, and significant coastal flooding may occur there.

The strong northeast wind will have the biggest effects on the beaches that face north and northeast.

Coastal flooding will be most likely to occur in some areas when the tide is high. At 11 p.m. on Sunday night will be the high tide cycle of greatest concern.

The high tides on Monday evening and Tuesday morning around midnight will also be problematic, but they should be a little lower than the high tide on Sunday night. Given the destruction of sea walls and dunes caused by hurricanes Ian and Nicole a year ago, the Volusia coastline is obviously very susceptible to coastal flooding.

In addition to the higher-than-normal tides, large, breaking waves measuring 8 to 10 feet will be forming.

Wave heights at sea will range from 11 to 16 feet.

The coastal flood alert for Brevard indicates that modest coastal flooding is anticipated but is still possible.

Even though rain is expected, this type of flooding is not caused by rain but rather by a strong wind that pushes ocean water inland along the coast.

A significant pressure difference over a comparatively small area is being aided by strong high pressure in the Northeast.

This is contributing to the strong winds that will cause Florida’s big waves and maybe coastal flooding.
