Declan Cronin, a right-hand pitcher, was claimed by the Miami Marlins off waivers from the Houston Astros, the team announced on Wednesday.

Right-handed pitcher Kaleb Ort was designated for assignment by the Marlins to clear space on their 40-man roster.

On January 31, the Astros placed Cronin on the roster for assignment to create space for Trey Cabbage, an outfielder and first baseman they had obtained in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels. On January 4, they acquired Cronin from the Chicago White Sox through waivers.

Cronin from Holy Cross was chosen by Chicago in the 36th round of the 2019 MLB Draft. After going through the White Sox’s minor league system, the reliever was eventually called up to the major leagues in 2023.

Cronin had a 9.00 ERA, 1.636 WHIP, 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings, and a -0.4 WAR in nine MLB appearances.

However, Cronin has a record of 12-6 in his minor league career with a 3.81 ERA, 1.313 WHIP, and 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Over the last two seasons, Cronin has excelled in Triple-A, going 4-0 with a 3.74 ERA in 74 games.

Down in Charlotte, Cronin seemed to have at least established himself as a reliable depth reliever, but when the White Sox added left-handed reliever Tim Hill to their roster in December, Cronin was removed off the 40-man roster.

Now that Cronin is in Miami, Ort is the one losing his spot on the roster.

After serving as a member of the Boston Red Sox for the previous three seasons, Ort was released by the team in October. A few days later, Ort was claimed by the Seattle Mariners; but, in December, the Marlins won him.

Ort has a record of 2-4 in his 47 major league appearances, a 1.703 WHIP, 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings, and a -0.7 WAR.
