Sunshine State did fairly well in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best States rankings.

Florida rose six points to the top slot for economy and maintained its top spot for education nationally for the second year in a row. Overall, the state was placed No. 9 among the states in the United States, up from No. 10 in the 2023 list.

Low in-state tuition costs and the nation’s second-highest rates of timely graduation at public universities were highlighted as key elements in the education ranking by U.S. News & World Report. An analysis of SAT and ACT scores revealed that Florida led the nation in college readiness as well, the report said.

Florida’s “strong job and overall economic growth” helped the state rise to the top of the category in terms of the economy.

According to the report, the state’s population grew by 18 percent between 2010 and 2022 as a result of its pleasant climate, lack of a state income tax, and perceived cheaper cost of living.

Other noteworthy Florida individual rankings were as follows:

  • No. 13 for Crime & Corrections
  • No. 13 for Natural Environment
  • No. 20 for Fiscal Stability
  • No. 20 for Infrastructure
  • No. 26 for Health Care
  • No. 45 for Opportunity
