It’s no secret winning any award is great for brand reputation and future sales. Consumers love to read reviews and monitor charts for the best cars, trucks, and SUVs of the year to help them make a decision on their potential next vehicle. But no award out there screams “A+++” quite as loud as a MotorTrend “______ of the Year” award.
Regardless of what kind of year the industry has had, reviews and ratings must go on for those that are able to purchase or lease a vehicle. And while this year has presented plenty of ups and downs, the people must know which cars are ‘la crème de la crème.’ For some, it may have come as a surprise, and for others, it was the obvious choice, but for the third year in a row, the all-new Ram 1500 TRX light-duty pickup truck just won the prestigious MotorTrend Truck of the Year Award.
Much like any competition for a “best of” award, multiple finalists are selected for their outstanding achievements and accomplishments and value. But MotorTrend has a specific process to ensure the best vehicle is chosen and worthy of notoriety. To compete, a vehicle must be an all-new or a significantly upgraded model-year. Once selected, the competing vehicles are put through the wringer on a plethora of performance tests by MotorTrend editors to push the vehicle’s limits. This data is then compiled and double-checked on three separate courses at a professional automotive test center before being selected as a winner.
The Ram 1500 TRX blew away judges and posted the quickest zero to 60 miles per hour for a pickup ever tested— 4.1 seconds. Judges also noted the interior quality and “relatively refined” on-road handling performance helped make the decision.
The grading criteria by MotorTrend covers engineering excellence, efficiency, design advancement, value, safety, and performance of intended function. This year’s award is extra special for the make and etches itself in history with the Ram 1500 pickup truck. According to MotorTrend Editor-in-Chief Mark Rechtin, a three-year consecutive win is one of the rarest feats seen by the publication.
“Never before has a brand won Car, Truck, or SUV of the Year in three consecutive years…Winning this three-peat speaks to the excellence of the Ram pickup truck platform and the lengths their engineers and designers go to make it so dominant,” said Rechtin.
To put the historic run into perspective, since Ram’s split from Dodge in 2009, the make has received the MotorTrend Truck of the Year award in six of the last 11 years. The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX joins the 2020 Ram Heavy Duty and 2019 Ram 1500 as part of the gold medal three-peat.
Ram is not limited to just the models that have won the award. The make has a full lineup of pickup trucks for various needs, such as the Ram 1500, 2500/3500 Heavy Duty, 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab, ProMaster, and ProMaster City.
