After Hurricane Milton destroyed parts of Florida and left inhabitants waking up to assess the damage, at least 13 people have died.

On Wednesday night, Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane close to Siesta Key in Sarasota County. It brought with it powerful winds, several tornadoes, 28-foot seas, heavy rains, and a destructive storm surge.

Tornadoes caused by the hurricane killed four residents of a retirement community in St. Lucie County when twelve twisters formed in the area in less than 20 minutes.

A crane collapsed into The Tampa Bay Times in St. Petersburg due to violent winds, and Tropicana Field baseball stadium’s roof is still in poor condition.

Florida has experienced a power outage in over 3.3 million homes and businesses, with the west-central region being most severely affected.

Millions of people received evacuation alerts, and Bradenton Police Chief Melanie gave a dire forecast for anybody who disregarded the advise. “Bodies are probably what we’ll be finding in the morning,” she said on Thursday morning on BBC Radio 4.

Following impact, Milton has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane and is currently circulating off the east coast of Florida, where locals are still struggling with severe gusts and surge.
