A winter storm warning is in effect for parts of Florida, and Tuesday and Wednesday are predicted to bring several inches of snow.

Ahead of the storm, which will mostly affect the northern portion of the state, Governor Ron DeSantis has proclaimed a State of Emergency.

The Tampa Bay region is also seeing cold rain from the same system.

What is the expected snowfall in Florida?

Overview:

First, it’s important to note that as of Tuesday, FOX 13 meteorologists predict there won’t be any snow or ice anywhere in the Tampa Bay area.

A few inches of snow may fall along the I-10 corridor beginning later Tuesday and lasting into Wednesday, with accumulating snow expected over a portion of north Florida, particularly from the area near Tallahassee west through the Panhandle.

While not all places will have snow accumulation, a mix of wintry precipitation could spread east to Jacksonville and as far south as Gainesville.

Road conditions north of the Bay Area may be hazardous due to the wintry mix.

“Snow is one thing. Ice is a concern, “FOX 13 Meteorologist Dave Osterberg said, noting that a quarter-inch to a half-inch of ice accumulation in areas like Tallahassee and Jacksonville would be” significant.

Forecast for the Tampa Bay area

Local viewpoint:

According to Osterberg, cold rain will “funnel in from time to time” during Tuesday, with the afternoon high remaining in the 50s, while the snow and ice will remain north of the Bay Area.

Wednesday morning should see more rain as lows return to the 40s, with the possibility of 30s in our northern regions.

Before we clear out in time for the weekend, Osterberg says another round of showers will pass through on Thursday.

Next steps:

At Tampa’s annual Gasparilla Pirate Fest on Saturday, temperatures could drop into the low 60s. With the warming trend continuing throughout next week, the 70s will then return on Sunday.
