MIAMI – Today is the day that registered Republican voters who haven’t already participated in early or mail-in voting will cast their ballots in the Presidential Preference Primary.

Since the Florida Democratic Party only named Joseph R. Biden Jr. as their favored candidate, there won’t be a ballot or election for Democrats. With victories in Georgia, Mississippi, and Washington on March 12, President Biden secured the Democratic Party’s candidacy.

What is on the Florida primary election ballot?

The Florida Republican Party nominated several candidates. As a result, an election and ballot for the Presidential Preference Primary are held.

The Presidential Preference Primary in Florida is a closed primary. This implies that the presidential nominee of the party of their choice may only be chosen by registered voters inside that party.

Florida’s first primary of the 2024 campaign is being held on Tuesday.

There will be a primary election on August 20. “In a primary election, candidates or nominees for offices by respective parties may only be supported by voters who are registered members of those parties. According to the Florida Division of Elections, “all registered voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote on issues and nonpartisan races during a Primary Election.”

Which Republican contenders are running in the Florida primary?

Former President Donald Trump is listed on the Republican ballot, which was certified on December 19, 2023, along with six other candidates who have previously declared their withdrawals:

  • Niky Haley, former UN Ambassador
  • Ron DeSantis, Florida governor
  • Chris Christie, former NJ governor
  • Asa Hutchinson, former Arkansas governor
  • Vivek Ramaswamy, entrepreneur and politician
  • Ryan L. Binkley, pastor, businessman and politician

With the exception of two primaries, the former president easily won all of the early nomination races. Haley only prevailed in two GOP primaries—in Vermont and Washington, D.C.—before withdrawing the day after Super Tuesday. Haley was the final Republican to face Trump.

Following his victory in Washington on March 12, Trump will likely be the Republican nominee for president in 2024, having collected the 1,125 delegates required to secure the candidacy. In the Georgia and Mississippi primaries, he also prevailed.

Following the election on Tuesday, “Florida’s designated political party delegates convene at their respective national conventions to formally propose the party’s preferred choice in accordance with party protocols. July or August is when these national conferences usually take place. The names of the presidential candidates who will represent the party on the November general election ballot are then submitted by the party to the state, as stated by the Florida Division of Elections.
