What does Joe Biden leaving the race mean for Florida?

After weeks of conjecture, President Joe Biden declared on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the presidential contest, casting doubt on the results of the 2024 election.

Right now, a lot is unknown. However, in Florida, at this early point, we can address a few important questions.

What influence did Democrats from Florida have on Biden’s choice?

One of the states that supported Biden the most across the nation was the Florida Democratic Party. Biden was able to win every delegate when the party called off this year’s presidential race.

State party chair Nikki Fried stated in an interview on July 17 that Biden was the center of her party’s unity.

“Compared to a month ago, the people supporting Joe Biden here are more motivated today,” she remarked.

Few Florida Democrats were part of the chorus calling on the president to resign. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Frederica Wilson, on the other hand, were among the president’s most outspoken supporters following Biden’s severely criticized debate performance on June 27. The former leader of the Democratic National Committee, Wasserman Schultz, supported Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday as Biden’s successor.

Rep. Kathy Castor of Tampa was among the few Democrats to demand that Biden step down, saying on Friday that he ought to “pass the torch.”

However, influential Democrats and funders put pressure on Biden, fearing that his campaign’s downward trend will cost their party the Senate this year.

Republicans expressed open hopes that Biden would continue to run. This week in Milwaukee at the Republican National Convention, Governor Ron DeSantis referred to it as the “best possible scenario for Republicans.”

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio stated last week that Biden ought to step down from his position if he is not prepared to fight for reelection. In response to Biden’s declaration on Sunday, his Senate colleague Rick Scott made the same statement.

What is revealed by the polling?

With Harris as the nominee, not many significant polls of Florida have been conducted. However, according to FiveThirtyEight, a predicting website, most surveys showed Biden trailing Trump by five to ten points.

In November, will Biden’s name still be on the ballot?

According to the state elections website, parties in Florida submit the names of their candidates to authorities following their conventions. As Biden resigned prior to the convention, the newly nominated Democratic candidate will be listed on state ballots.
