As the state Department of Commerce prepares to issue an October unemployment rate on Friday, Florida’s first-time unemployment claims decreased last week.

The revised figure of 6,841 claims filed in Florida during the week ending November 2 was lowered to 6,356 claims filed in Florida during the week ending November 9 by the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday. Both numbers, which followed short spikes in claims after Hurricane Helene at the end of September and Hurricane Milton in October, are about comparable to the weekly average of claims for the year.

Florida has averaged 6,576 claims each week since the year began.

In the week ending October 5, claims rose to 9,556 following Helene.

Following Milton, 10,800 claims were made in Florida in the week of October 19.

The unemployment rate in Florida was 3.3 percent between April and September. In October, the national unemployment rate was 4.1 percent.

Last week, an estimated 217,000 claims were filed nationwide, compared to 221,000 the week before.
