Florida and areas of the Southeast are experiencing a significant shake-up in the supermarket industry as German-owned Aldi purchases all Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations in the area, including those in Florida.
According to a press statement from Aldi, this acquisition is a part of Southeastern Grocers’ wider division into numerous other companies.
“Like ALDI, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket have long histories and many loyal customers in the Southeast and we look forward to serving them in the years to come,” Aldi CEO Jason Hart said in the release. “The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills. The transaction supports our long-term growth strategy across the United States, including plans to add 120 new stores nationwide this year to reach a total of more than 2,400 stores by year-end.”
In the Southeast, in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi, there are about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets.
The shift won’t happen right away because the transaction won’t be completed until the first half of 2024, according to Aldi. Additionally, this is dependent on receiving regulatory approval and taking other merger-related measures.
Some locations will be transformed into Aldi stores if the merger is authorized. The Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores on the other hand will continue to run as normal.
“The transaction will bring together three trusted brands that share a long-standing commitment to delivering an exceptional grocery experience and making a positive impact in the communities where they operate,” Aldi said in its release. “ALDI first established its presence in the Southeast in the mid-1990s and since has invested $2.5 billion in the region.”
