The next-generation Transporter will be released by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in 2024

The forthcoming VW Transporter and the Ford Transit Custom, including the electric version, E-Transit Custom, will be built on the same platform thanks to a long-standing relationship between Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) and Ford. Three distinct configurations of the new Transporter, which will be produced in Kocaeli, Turkey, will be offered to meet diverse needs. It can be set up as a shuttle or minibus for commercial passenger transportation with up to nine seats, an estate vehicle with two rows of seats and a load space, or a traditional delivery van with a big load area.

When Herbert Diess and Jim Hackett were the CEOs of VW and Ford, respectively, this alliance between VWCV and Ford first began. During their time there, the two businesses established a MEB partnership for the Ford Explorer and another Ford vehicle from Cologne, both of which utilized Wolfsburg-based MEB technology. They also looked into collaborating between their respective light commercial vehicle divisions, and as a result, the Ford Ranger’s plug-in hybrid system was used in the VW Amarok.

Additionally, like the Ford E-Transit Custom, the future VW Transporter will further bind the two businesses together. The organizations’ shared goal of providing their clients with high-quality vehicles and services is demonstrated by this alliance.

It is anticipated that the Ranger and Amarok will share gearboxes and engines. It’s crucial to keep in mind that just because they have certain things in common doesn’t mean the lineups will be the same. In order to distinguish the Transporter from its rivals, Volkswagen will have the chance to weigh the choices and determine which ones to pursue.

Volkswagen hasn’t made its Transporter offerings official, but based on what Ford is providing, reasonable assumptions can be made. Ford offers diesel engines of 110 horsepower, 136 hp, 150 hp, and 170 hp as options. The T6.1 Transporter previously provided 90, 110, 150, and 204 horsepower options, so it’s logical to assume that the new model will offer at least some of Ford’s 2.0-liter diesel engines.

With a potential range of 236 miles, the Transit Custom has raised the standard for electric alternatives. Therefore, if VW releases an electric version of the Transporter, it’s likely to provide something pretty similar. Additionally, the Transit Custom offers two engine outputs, giving VW the option of a 134 horsepower or a 215 horsepower variant. The inclusion of an electric alternative to the Transporter portfolio would be a fantastic improvement and would aid Volkswagen in competing with other brands on the market.
