Disney has published new, updated concept art for the Monsters Inc. land, giving us a better idea of what to expect after revealing that MuppetVision 3D will be closing to make room for the theme during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Visitors will enter Monstropolis, where monsters live, work, and play, after passing beneath the archway from Grand Avenue as they make their way back from the land’s entrance.

The restrooms that were once Gonzo’s Royal Flush are on the left; they now have fangs added to the top, giving them a more ominous aspect. A new fountain has taken the place of Miss Piggy’s as Ms. Liberty in the middle of this initial section. The sculpture in the fountain is now a gigantic eyeball instead.

The concept image for the theater that used to house MuppetVision 3D depicts it as “The Monstro,” with a big eye in the middle of the sign advertising “Late Night Screams.” An eye pattern surrounds the clock face of the big clock tower to the right. A billboard featuring two monsters with laugh canisters is located along the roof line to the left, promoting Monsters Inc.

Across the open walkway is the former PizzeRizzo, which is now unknown but is expected to close to make room for something new. Another billboard that reads, “We’re Monsters Inc.” and features Mike and Sulley is located along the roof. (Goodbye, dearest rat pizza neon.)

This concept graphic also makes it apparent that the Stage 1 Company Store will be destroyed to make room for additional walkways and green space.

We continue into the land, passing a number of trees, until we reach what is now It’s A Wonderful Shop, which will probably close as well (although this artwork does depict the front with holiday garland in the windows). Another billboard is located on the roof, however this one promotes Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, which is presently located in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland.

A theater that Disney intends to use in the new territory suggests that there will be some kind of show, even though the majority of the billboard art in the area appears to be existing placeholder imagery. We don’t currently know, however it’s probable that Disney moved Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor to this location. The choice to relocate an outdated and unpopular show from Magic Kingdom to Disney’s Hollywood Studios may also seem odd.

The entrance to Harryhausen’s, the sushi joint from the first movie where Mike Wazowski takes Celia Mae out on a date, is the next point of interest. This concept graphic makes it obvious that Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano will be replaced with this restaurant idea, even if it appears to utilize some of the street facade.

The structure itself is more trapezoid in shape, with the entrance formed by two chopsticks. The two chopsticks meet at the top of the structure to support an eyeball.

The entrance to Monsters Inc. and the display building for the previously planned doors conveyor belt suspended coaster will be visible to visitors as they make their way back into the land. The M-shaped structure has several smokestacks on either side and towers above.

Disney revealed earlier today, November 22, 2024, that MuppetVision 3D would shut down to create room for Monstropolis. The Muppets will, however, take over Rock ‘n Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith on Sunset Boulevard.
