The political climate in Florida may be greatly impacted by President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of two Florida congressmen for possible Cabinet posts.

Rep. Mike Waltz may serve as Trump’s national security adviser, while Sen. Marco Rubio is a candidate for secretary of state. Trump will nominate Rubio for the position, according to multiple people familiar with the process, as reported by NBC News.

A Secretary of State: What is it?

As the fourth in line to become president, the Secretary of State is one of the most important posts in the U.S. government, representing the country abroad.

As a senior member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, Rubio has a wealth of foreign policy knowledge.

According to multiple people familiar with the process, Rubio, who was vying for the position of vice president, had shown interest in maybe joining Trump’s Cabinet if the opportunity arose.

The senator and Susie Wiles, the incoming chief of staff, are close.

During Trump’s third presidential campaign, the Florida senator—a China hawk and a potential vice presidential candidate—was a fixture on the campaign trail.

Rubio restored his reputation as a populist in Washington following his unsuccessful 2016 GOP presidential campaign. In addition, he developed connections within his party, across the aisle, and internationally while honing his foreign policy credentials as the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

After contacting Rubio’s office, WESH 2 has not received a response regarding his acceptance of the position.

Advisor on National Security

Congressman Waltz of Central Florida is a Green Beret who served combat tours in Afghanistan and is a retired colonel in the National Guard.

He covers portions of Marion, Flagler, Volusia, and Lake counties.

over worry on Capitol Hill that Trump may tap members of the House, where the final count is still pending, the nod comes over concerns that removing any GOP members from the chamber would necessitate a fresh election to fill the vacancy. Prior to Trump’s official declaration, the individual discussed the issue while speaking on condition of anonymity.

The action would place Waltz at the center of a long list of national security issues, from the continuous attempt to arm Ukraine and growing concerns about the alliance between Russia and North Korea to the ongoing attacks in the Middle East by Iran’s proxies and the call for an end to Israel’s war with Hamas and Hezbollah.

On his X account, Waltz posted the following statement:

“I am deeply honored President Trump is placing his trust in me to serve in his Cabinet as National Security Advisor. There is no higher calling than defending our nation’s values, freedoms, and the safety of every American.

Together with President Trump and his team, we will confront the evolving challenges of today’s world and hold firm against those who would harm our way of life. Our nation deserves nothing less than bold, unwavering leadership, and that’s what he will deliver.

America will keep its allies close, we will not be afraid to confront our adversaries, and we will invest in the technologies that keep our country strong. America’s greatest strength is its booming economy and our energy dominance, and those tools will keep us out of wars and allow us to once again lead from a position of strength.

I fully believe that America’s best days are still ahead, and that with President Trump’s America First Agenda, we will secure our freedoms and forge a future where our nation remains the land of the free, and the land looked to for leadership and courage by the world.

To my constituents in Florida, thank you. It was an honor to fight for you in Washington and Florida will always be home.”
