Snow in the Sunshine State? Strong cold front brings a rare, wintry mix to the Panhandle on Tuesday

On Tuesday morning, snow fell in some surprising places in North Florida!

In the far west of the Florida Panhandle on Tuesday, an unusual wintry mix made landfall. When people woke up, a freezing drizzle was falling in areas west and along Pensacola, and some reports even mentioned sleet.

All of it was made possible by a powerful cold front that brought in a sudden gust of cold air with just enough moisture left in it to bring the winter weather to the surface.

Pensacola saw lows on Tuesday morning that were slightly below freezing.

A Jay homeowner named Miranda Simpson-Wes Kell posted a video of snow flurries falling to the ground in her driveway to FOX 35 on Tuesday morning. The video was taken outside of her home at around 7:30 a.m. Jay is roughly an hour north of Pensacola and a few miles south of the Florida–Alabama border.

While it’s uncommon, it’s not completely unheard of for this to occur in Florida. When cold air undercuts the moisture, winter occurrences can occur in the Sunshine State, but typically the cold air gets here too late for them to occur.

Even though it’s still too warm for snow, freezing rain can still have a significant effect and make driving hazardous.

According to the weather report, freeze warnings will be in place for the counties in northern Florida from late Tuesday through early Wednesday. For at least a few hours, Central Florida lows will drop to 32 degrees or below. Throughout the rest of the week, temperatures will progressively rise in anticipation of another powerful cold front that is predicted to arrive in the region late Friday.
