2025 RamCharger is expected to reduce range anxiety when hauling

One problem electric pickup trucks have is that they are not as good at conventional jobs like hauling and towing, which are the main reasons people buy pickups. Electric motors produce a smooth and seamless pull that makes pulling and towing seem straightforward, thus the act of towing itself isn’t the problem. Furthermore, there is no need for a transmission to downshift when accelerating, which removes the noise from high RPMs and loud cooling fans.

The problem appears as you add weight, particularly when you add a trailer’s load. The tow range is drastically lowered, frequently by half or more. Because owners are likely to arrive with a virtually empty battery and feel the immediate need to charge to full capacity owing to the limited range, recharge durations are extended, often doubling or tripling the typical wait time. Due to a lack of pull-through quick charge stations, customers may have to unhook the trailer while it is charging. Furthermore, the majority of fast-charging stations are found along interstate highways, which restricts the alternatives available to individuals who have aspirations of pulling an Airstream to remote, off-grid camping.

Take a look at the 2025 RamCharger

The Ramcharger is cleverly made to get past these obstacles by not being a fully electric car, at least not in all cases. It runs solely on two electric motors: a 319-hp motor in the back and a 335-hp motor driving the front axle. Both motors can produce a maximum torque of 615 pound-feet and a peak horsepower of 663 when they run at full capacity. In this sense, the 2025 Ramcharger distinguishes itself as an electrically driven vehicle that offers a smoother towing experience than rival models like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.

The way those motors get power is where the differences lie. With a 92 kWh gross capacity and a 70.8 kWh useable capacity, the liquid-cooled lithium battery powering the Ramcharger can provide up to 145 miles of pure electric range. When the system enters a “charge-sustaining” mode and the useful capacity is exhausted, a 3.6-liter gasoline V-6 engine that is exclusively attached to a generator provides the necessary electricity. Although this setup classifies the Ramcharger as a plug-in hybrid, its special characteristic—in which the engine only powers the generator and never the wheels—designates it as a plug-in series hybrid. This is a noteworthy characteristic since it operates similarly to a typical diesel-electric locomotive—which is well-known for its strong pulling capacities—when powered by gasoline.

Like a lot of personal pickups available on the market, most purchasers expect towing and hauling duties but rarely carry them out, especially when the payload and towing capacities are at their highest. These trucks are generally used as daily drivers, and the Ramcharger provides a convenient and easy electric driving experience for regular use with a battery range of 145 miles. Traveling without a trailer won’t present any problems because the V-6 generator, built to support a trailer weighing up to 14,000 pounds, won’t be put under much stress. The real towing experience is yet unclear. Pure electric propulsion ensures that the basic driving sense is smooth, stable, and shift-free; nevertheless, it is unclear how the powerful V-6 generator will affect the sound experience. One of the major mysteries that won’t be solved until a production-ready sample is made available early next year is this one. Nevertheless, the main benefit of the Ramcharger for towing surpasses these factors: finding a charging station during a road trip is unnecessary, regardless of whether one is towing or not. Owners need to make a quick trip to a petrol station that sells 87 octane.
