Mitsubishi Motors chooses TomTom Connected Navigation in restyling of Eclipse Cross Courtesy: TomTom International BV US
TomTom (TOM2), the leading independent location technology specialist, announced early in December that its full panel of navigation tools: real-time traffic services, maps, and connected navigation, were chosen by the Japanese motor brand to power the all-new Mitsubishi Cross’ infotainment system. The restyled Eclipse Cross SUV is the brand’s latest model to join the TomTom technology guided lineup, including the Outlander, Outlander Sport/RVR, Pajero Sport (not available in the U.S.), and the ASX.
TomTom teamed up with geographic location system, what3words, to bring Mitsubishi drivers across its lineup the ability to explore the innovative technology firsthand. Eclipse Cross drivers will be thrilled to use an industry-first functionality in built-in navigation when behind the wheel or offline. No app, cellular connection, or data is needed to navigate to the three simple encoded geographic points address from what3words.
A nav system that doesn’t require cellular connection? This is the same company that used to have a mess of tech pieces making up its entertainment system but is now relying on new technology such as the TomTom and what3words collaboration to bring drivers the ultimate navigation experience without the hassle.
what3words will work hand-in-hand with TomTom to deliver fast, simple, and easy-to-use points for seamless navigation around the globe. Users will notice that what3words divides the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares, each square occupying a one-of-a-kind three-word address. For example, if you want coordinates for the Southernmost Point in Key West, Florida, your key would be ///activates.tombs.assistant.
Confusing? Maybe. But does it work? Only time will tell, but Mitsubishi Motors seemed to be thrilled with the integration of the cool new tech.
“We are delighted to extend our deal with Mitsubishi, satisfying more of their drivers around the world with our leading location technologies,” said Antoine Saucier, Managing Director at TomTom Automotive. “Our collaboration with what3words in the new Eclipse Cross is yet another example of our pioneering efforts in in-vehicle navigation and continued commitment to providing easy-to-use solutions to drivers everywhere.”
The all-new Eclipse Cross is aiming to be a real winner in its class, and signs are pointing that it will rival the 2018 e-Evolution-esque concept. The Eclipse Cross will also feature the “Telematics OEM of the Year” award-winning Road Assist+ app, and the most recent Android-powered infotainment system. A tech lover’s dream!
“TomTom continues to enhance Mitsubishi drivers’ experience around the world. The what3words addressing technology, combined with TomTom’s ever-reliable navigation, maps, and traffic, ensures that Eclipse Cross drivers will get to where they want to go with ease,” said Chief Product Specialist of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Minoru Uehara.
The revolutionary technology aims to make the driver’s experience more enticing and user friendly.
Consumers won’t know more until the restyled Eclipse Cross releases alongside its family member in the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV. Curious to find out why the Eclipse Cross is a trending option in the lineup? Visit a local Florida Mitsubishi for a test drive.
