Thanksgiving. The one day in the year where you don’t have to make an excuse to go in for another plate at the dinner table. Heaping piles of mash potatoes and gravy, turkey, stuffing, rice and beans, cornbread, apple pie, pumpkin pie, the list goes on.
Before we enter Thanksgiving this season, we at Florida Insider figured we’d share some insight on America’s favorite cheat day.
According to Google search data gathered by Zippia, the most popular side dish in Florida is—Sweet Potato Casserole.
The career search engine site used Google Trends to narrow down the most searched side dishes by state and assigned the queries with the most searches to that state. Florida was one of only two states in the country to have sweet potato casserole as it’s favorite side dish.
Depending on which recipe you choose, you’re in for quite the sweet treat. Perhaps the combination of salty and sweet is what steers most Floridians toward the dish.
Traditionally, sweet potato casserole stars as the main ingredient of sweet potato, but from there, it’s open to creation. Many recipes include marshmallows, pecans, and lots of sugar. Think loaded mash potatoes with syrups and marshmallows and pecans.
One serving of this side dish will set you back who knows how many calories, but who cares; it’s Thanksgiving, they don’t count for that day.
Other side dishes that are most searched across the other 49 states are mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, creamed corn, and stuffing, of course.
Mashed potatoes took the crown for most popular with 10 states choosing that as the favorite, followed by mac and cheese in 7 states. Lots of carbs going around the table.
But whichever side dish you do choose for this year’s feast, remember, you won’t be the only one searching for some last-minute inspo.
