Parts of Central Florida are ringing in 2024 with heavy fog.
A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for Orange County, Northern Lake County, Southern Lake County, Seminole County, and Inland Volusia County until at least 10 a.m. on Monday.
According to FOX 35 Storm Team Meteorologist Brooks Garner, “Part of the reason is because we had all of the fireworks smoke mingling with fog out there, making it even thicker.”
Driving safely in fog
Use caution when driving on New Year’s Day. Here are some safety precautions you should remember from the NWS website if there is a lot of fog in your area:
- Take it slowly and give yourself more time to get where you’re going.
- Use your low-beam headlights to make your car visible to onlookers both in front of and behind you, as this will also turn on your taillights. If you have fog lights, use them.
- Allow enough space between your car and the one in front of you to allow for unexpected stops or alterations in the flow of traffic.
- Use your eyes to follow the lines on the road to make sure you are staying in the correct lane.
- The recommended course of action in really deep fog, where visibility is almost nonexistent, is to switch on your hazard lights first, then pull into a safe spot, such as a nearby business’ parking lot, and stop.
- If there isn’t a driveway or parking area available, move your car as far to the side of the road as you can. To prevent other vehicles from unintentionally running you over, once you’ve stopped, switch off all of your lights save for your hazard flashing lights, engage the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal. Additionally, make sure that your tail lights are off.
