Mental Illness Awareness Week is the first week in October.
In 1990, Congress formally declared the first full week of October to be MIAW in honor of the National Alliance on Mental Illness’s efforts to increase awareness of the condition.
Since then, activists have collaborated to support events—no matter how big or small—to raise awareness of mental illness.
The MIAW theme for this year is “Together We Care. Together We Share.”
Numerous free events are being held by NAMI Greater Orlando.
There will be a virtual panel on Monday, October 2, at 7 p.m. A panel discussion titled “Navigating Youth Mental Health: Empowering Resistance and Well-Being” will be part of the free event. Register here by clicking.
At 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, NAMIGO is hosting another free online panel. There will be a meeting of representatives from charity groups in Central Florida to talk about their goals and the needs of the neighborhood.
The intention is to encourage cooperation and encourage constructive change.
The first Gala of Giving Hope will thereafter be held by NAMIGO on Friday, October 7. Pete Early, a bestselling author and former journalist, will give the opening address.
