This holiday weekend, many Floridians are traveling vast distances.

From Friday, June 30, to Tuesday, July 4, more than 2.8 million Floridians, or 87,000 more than in the previous year, are expected to travel at least one distance of 50 miles or more, according to AAA.

Looking at figures for the entire country, it is anticipated that 50.7 million people would travel this weekend, up from 48.7 million the year before.

The most common means of transportation is still driving. According to AAA, 85 percent of all travelers will travel by car to reach their destinations. Over 43.2 million Americans, or slightly more than 1 million more drivers than in the previous year, are expected to use their cars to travel to their destinations, according to AAA.

Air travel serves as an alternative to driving. This Fourth of July weekend, more than 4.17 million Americans will travel to their destinations, setting yet another record. According to AAA, 219,823 Floridians are anticipated to fly.

Due to expected average travel times that are 30 percent higher than usual, Friday, June 30, is expected to be the busiest travel day. To prevent traffic, AAA advises driving in the early morning or after 6 p.m.
