You might think about the closest brunch place, the commute, and the caliber of the schools before relocating to a suburb. You’ll probably think about safety as another important factor.

A home’s value can also be impacted by the perceived safety of the neighborhood, which can be influenced by factors like property crime and fatal car accidents.

The personal finance website SmartAsset examined 360 suburbs in major U.S. metro areas and analyzed them using a variety of safety-related metrics, including rates of excessive drinking, property and violent crime rates based on FBI data, and deaths from drug poisonings and traffic accidents based on County Health Rankings.

The top ten safest suburbs in 2024, per SmartAsset’s rankings, are listed below:

  1. Lehi, Utah
  2. Bethesda, Maryland
  3. Layton, Utah
  4. Rockville, Maryland
  5. Great Falls, Virginia
  6. Dacula, Georgia
  7. Buford, Georgia
  8. Elmhurst, Illinois
  9. Oak Brook, Illinois
  10. Edgewater, New Jersey

Lehi finished sixth overall the previous year, behind Bethesda, Maryland; Carmel, Indiana; and Great Falls, Virginia, which took the top three places, respectively. Carmel fell to No. 18 this year, but Bethesda and Great Falls remained in the top ten.

The study’s lowest rates of violent and property crime were found in Johnstown, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, and Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston. About eighteen miles north of Albuquerque, Bernalillo, New Mexico, has the lowest rate in both categories.

DeLand and Largo, two suburbs in Florida, were among the least safe in the nation, ranking in the bottom ten. The remainder of SmartAsset’s report read as follows:

  1. Bernalillo, New Mexico
  2. Lumberton, North Carolina
