The Miami Hurricanes, who reached the Final Four, left for home early on Monday morning.
Following their victory over the Texas Longhorns, several University of Miami students got up extra early to welcome the Canes as they returned to Coral Gables.
The game was as intense as it gets, with Texas leading in the first half and the Hurricanes struggling to keep up.
Outside of the Watsco Center, there was a lot of jubilation and even some player photo ops.
With a regional championship under its belts, the team is on its way to the Final Four for the first time in school history.
Jim Larrañaga, the team’s head coach, was seen cutting the net after the university’s historic victory.
He contacted Local 10 on Monday morning, along with a number of ecstatic fans.
“We are very excited where we are, but we are also very excited about playing next Saturday,” Larrañaga said.
“I’m only in college for four years and we are in the final four–that’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity–gotta show up for the team,” student George Dowdle said.
After Florida Atlantic University’s Owls’ weekend victory over the Kansas State Wildcats to advance to the Final Four, where they will play San Diego State, there was a similar celebration less than 50 miles away on the Florida Atlantic University campus.
On Saturday, the Canes and UConn Huskies will compete.
