The Reasons Behind Professional Golfers’ Attraction to a Calm Town on Florida’s Atlantic Coast

Jupiter first resembles many of the other affluent coastal communities along Florida’s Atlantic coast: quiet streets with palm palms, yachts anchored in serene canals, and Mediterranean-style homes hidden behind tall hedges and security gates. However, if you pay more attention, you’ll see that there is a concentrated pool of professional golf talent in Florida’s Atlantic coast that is unmatched in the nation.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County has gradually emerged as one of the most prestigious destinations in professional golf during the past few decades. This is where Tiger Woods resides. Along with about a dozen other PGA and LIV Tour regulars, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Rickie Fowler all do.

The appeal is simple. Within a 15-mile radius, there are 69 golf courses. The weather is consistently pleasant. Private spaces and room to construct personal exercise facilities are features of luxury residences. Additionally, for athletes who compete for multimillion-dollar rewards, Florida residency makes financial sense because there is no state income tax.

It took some time for Jupiter to become the favored city of the golf elite. And Jack Nicklaus was largely responsible for it. In the 1960s, the 18-time major winner and his wife, Barbara, relocated to Palm Beach County. They established the Bear’s Club, a private golf community in Jupiter, in 1999 with the goal of providing professionals with the seclusion and practice facilities they couldn’t find elsewhere. The club contributed to the region’s reputation as a haven for serious players with big budgets.

The upscale community has attracted both golfers and non-golfers; former residents include Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, and Celine Dion. In 2017, fellow major champion Ernie Els gave Bear’s Club to five-time major winner Rory McIlroy. The 2.4-acre Mediterranean-style home with nine bedrooms is currently worth more than $18 million. It has a home cinema, a recording studio, a tennis court, a gym, and a pool overlooking the club’s private course. With his victory at the 2025 Masters, McIlroy recently completed the career Grand Slam. He has stated that he intends to build a house in London, but he has made it clear that this move is temporary and that he would continue to use his Jupiter estate as a base.

Woods bought a 12-acre beachfront home on Jupiter Island for $40 million in 2006, and he lives a short distance away. He demolished the previous home and constructed a unique compound with a four-hole practice course, a 100-foot lap pool, and two connected buildings—one for training and one for living. As of right now, the estate is valued at about $60 million. In 2010, he constructed a house nearby for his mother, Kultida. The house is situated on two adjacent parcels that Woods bought for a total of $2.4 million in 2007, one year after his father, Earl, passed away. Woods is a major player in TGL, the tech-enabled indoor golf league that he and McIlroy co-founded and that plays its games inside Palm Beach Gardens’ SoFi Center.

Other professionals have done the same. The $14 million home of Rickie Fowler includes a private dock, a pool, a putting green, and a tree-lined road reminiscent of Magnolia Lane. The 11,500-square-foot home, which was featured on Netflix’s Full Swing, has nine bathrooms, six bedrooms, a sports bar, and a games room.

The house of Brooks Koepka, which was included in the documentary series as well, is located close to the Loxahatchee River. The 13,000-square-foot mansion, which was built to his exacting specifications, features a putting facility in the backyard, multiple garages, ten bathrooms, and six bedrooms. According to Realtor.com, Koepka paid little more than $3 million for the lot in 2018; today, the house is valued at around $6 million.

Jupiter provides several of these players with a special fusion of seclusion, elegance, and usefulness. The still somewhat unknown community’s median listing price is $1.2 million, which is a significant sum but still far less than Palm Beach’s $3 million, according to Realtor.com. Nevertheless, there are now over 40 Jupiter real estate listings for $10 million or more. For background, the area’s median sale price has more than doubled in the past 20 years, indicating a rise in demand and interest from affluent purchasers. However, statistics aside, the area’s easy access to a lifestyle focused on the greens is what actually draws golf’s elite.
