Florida State’s case
Can an unbeaten ACC champion be turned down by the committee? Naturally, no. However, Florida State’s chances of making the playoffs will be all but eliminated if it loses to Louisville in Charlotte this weekend while playing without its starting quarterback.
However, FSU’s triumph over its in-state foe this past week showed just how capable the Seminole defense may be. With a slim lead (17–14) in the fourth quarter, FSU completely eliminated any chance of a comeback by sacking Florida quarterback Max Brown four times for a loss of 17 yards. Tate Rodemaker is holding his own in the pocket despite not being a Heisman candidate; in his two games as the starting quarterback, he has completed an average of 52% of his throws. With Trey Benson’s quickness and an explosive wide receiver core in Jaheim Bell, Johnny Wilson, and Keon Coleman, this offense still has a strong argument to be a threat against 10-2 Louisville.
The current run is evocative of FSU football’s triumph ten years ago, when Jameis Winston, the Heisman winner, guided the undefeated Seminoles to their third consecutive national championship. After two losing seasons, Mike Norvell managed to heal the scars from the Willie Taggart period and Jimbo Fischer’s unexpected departure, leading the Seminoles back to their former greatness. The Noles have only 60 minutes this weekend to decide their CFP fate, with other one-loss teams, like Texas and Alabama, salivating at the opportunity to pass FSU for the top place.
Buckeyes bumped down
Following a close 24–30 setback to Michigan last week, the Buckeyes dropped four spots this week. Ohio State may advance if it wins the Pac-12 title, but if Florida State, Texas, or even Alabama prevail in any of their respective conference championships, the Buckeyes will be overshadowed in the CFP competition because they lack the requisite playing experience of some of these SEC one-loss teams.
