One of the numerous cutting-edge surgical technologies improving patient care recently opened Nicklaus Children’s Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower is the Medtronic O-arm® StealthStation® S8® Surgical System for Neurosurgery, an intraoperative 2D/3D imaging equipment.

Powerful 3D representations of the patient’s anatomy are displayed during surgery by the technology, which is mostly utilized for pediatric brain and spine surgeries. When paired with a surgical navigation system, it allows surgeons to see in real time where implant devices are in relation to the patient’s anatomy, ensuring that hardware is positioned optimally throughout surgery. After surgery, imaging was usually done to verify the placement of device implants before obtaining the surgical system for neurosurgery.

The Spine Smart Dose is a special feature of the Medtronic O-arm® StealthStation® S8® that Nicklaus Children’s Hospital will be the first pediatric facility in the Southeast to provide. With the use of machine learning and pre-existing O-armTM pictures, this technology can reduce radiation exposure for patients and healthcare personnel by up to 70%. The new technique will be applied to neuroplastic procedures as well as situations involving the spine and skull.

“We at Nicklaus Children’s are dedicated to providing our patients with the best and safest surgical experience,” stated Dr. Toba N. Niazi, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Chief of Neurosurgery. In order to do this, we make investments in cutting-edge technologies, such the O-arm® StealthStation® S8®, which improves the surgeon’s capacity to see the surgical process and, consequently, the experience and outcome for the patient. Additionally, this equipment reduces radiation exposure related to imaging for both our patients and the clinical staff, improving everyone’s safety.

Pediatric patients with distinct anatomical features also benefit from the O-arm® StealthStation® S8®, which gives their doctors instant imaging and further details on the child’s structure. Surgeons can better customize care to meet the needs of each patient with improved visualization.
