Though he clarified that a constitutional amendment would be necessary, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis supported the concept of doing away with property taxes across the Sunshine State.
In response to a comment on X that called for the elimination of property taxes in the state, the governor—who is currently completing his second term following a resounding reelection victory in Florida’s 2022 gubernatorial contest—asked what would have to be done to make that happen.
“Local, not state, taxes apply to real estate. Therefore, in order to abolish them (which I would support) or even to reform or lower them, we would need to enact a constitutional change that would need the consent of 60 percent of voters, DeSantis said.
“We should put the boldest amendment on the ballot that has a chance of getting that 60 percent,” he said.
“I agree that taxing land/property is the more oppressive and ineffective form of taxation,” said the governor.
One of President Donald Trump’s sons, Eric Trump, retweeted DeSantis’ post and praised the concept, saying, “Florida is setting the standard! “This is incredible!”
Since he posted it on Thursday night, the governor’s tweet has received over 50,000 likes.
After placing a resounding second in the Iowa Republican presidential caucus, DeSantis launched a 2023 presidential campaign but later withdrew and endorsed Trump in early 2024.
