Is Trump anxious over Florida? Democrat-led ad purchase is evidence of the state’s competitiveness

One small ad buy is garnering notice despite the millions of dollars that former President Donald Trump is spending on television advertising to stifle Kamala Harris’s momentum.

The former president’s home media market in Florida is West Palm Beach, where the Trump campaign purchased $48,000 worth of advertising, according to ad-tracking companies AdImpact and Medium Buying. On Tuesday, the 15-second cable advertisements will debut.

Democrats seized on the advertisement purchase to claim that Trump’s campaign is anxious about Florida, where two recent polls indicate a closer race than anticipated.

In addition to providing information regarding the Trump ad purchase on X, Florida Democratic Party Executive Director Phillip Jerez commented, “Donald Trump is scared of losing Florida.”

In a study conducted this month by USA TODAY, Suffolk University, and WSVN-TV, Trump led Harris in Florida by five percentage points, but in a survey conducted by Florida Atlantic University, Trump’s lead was three points.

Many people came to the conclusion that Florida, the largest swing state in the country, was no longer competitive after Trump increased his margin of victory there in 2020, winning by 3.3 percentage points, and Gov. Ron DeSantis easily won reelection by 19 points in 2022.

However, Harris has galvanized Democrats, particularly in Florida, where the party is attempting to mobilize its grassroots to challenge Trump and Republicans in subsequent races, such as U.S. Sen. Rick Scott. The Trump campaign commercials are being used by Democrats as evidence that the state is involved.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried posted on X, “We told you that Trump would start to put money on TV in Florida.”

However, it’s possible that the West Palm Beach advertisements are just intended for one person. Trump is well-known for being an avid watcher of television news, and his principal place of residence is his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach.

In a statement, Trump spokesperson Brian Hughes stated, “Florida is deep red, Trump country, but we will never take any state for granted.” “We have robust campaign organizations across the nation and make investments throughout.”

According to a Weslyan Media Project research, since mid-July, 44,000 national advertisements supporting Trump have aired, compared to 32,700 for Harris or President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the race on July 21.

“However, spending is greater on the Democratic side, with about $63 million in spending versus about $49 million spent on ads promoting Trump,” according to the organization.

The important swing states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada have seen the most of the ad investment. Over $4 million has been spent on television advertisements by Republicans and Democrats in six media cities (Philadelphia, Phoenix, Atlanta, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Detroit) for the presidential contest since mid-July.

Philadelphia is the media market that has spent the most on presidential advertisements, at around $12 million.
