A candidate supported by former President Donald Trump for the Florida state Senate lost the Republican primary to one supported by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

As of Tuesday night, after over 95 percent of the votes had been counted, Florida state Representative Tom Leek had defeated Trump’s candidate, David Shoar, by a significant margin of 47 percent to 28 percent, according to The Associated Press.

Several influential Republicans in Florida politics, such as U.S. Senator Rick Scott, who emerged victorious in his primary on Tuesday, endorsed Leek in addition to DeSantis.

Though he received Trump’s “complete and total” endorsement this month, Shoar—a former St. Johns County sheriff—finished the contest neck and neck with third-place finisher, retired professional wrestler Gerry James.

“David Shoar is a tremendous America First Patriot who is running to represent the incredible people of Florida’s 7th State Senate District!” On August 5, Trump penned a post on Truth Social.

“David Shoar, who is 100% MAGA, and has been with us from the very beginning, has my Complete and Total Endorsement – HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” he stated.

The results of Trump’s endorsements have been uneven. Numerous well-known candidates supported by the former president have lost their primaries, including three who fell in a single night in late June, despite the fact that many of his endorsees have found victory.
