As President-elect Trump’s choice to head the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister withdrawn his candidacy.

“To have been nominated by President-Elect @realDonaldTrump to serve as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration is the honor of a lifetime,” Chronister said in an article on X.

“After reflecting on the seriousness of this crucial duty for a few days, I have decided that I must politely step aside from consideration. There are many projects I am dedicated to completing and more work to be done for the people of Hillsborough County,” Chronister added.

“I sincerely appreciate the nomination, outpouring of support by the American people, and look forward to continuing my service as Sheriff of Hillsborough County.”

Chronister, who has been re-elected twice, was selected to lead the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in 2017 by then-Florida Governor Rick Scott.
