Attention all SUV and compact car enthusiasts! A new and improved generation of the Chevrolet Trax crossover is heading on down. Its more luxurious rival, the Buick Encore, shares a similar platform and mechanisms, but unfortunately, is getting axed. However, the Trax model is here to stay.
A spokesperson for Chevy told Roadshow that it “will reveal an all-new Trax later this year.” In the meantime, the current Trax will end production late into 2022. The assembly of the next generation of this model will begin in the first half of 2023.
Last year, the automaker moved 42,590 Trax vehicles. This is a major decrease of 59.9 percent from the Trax’s 106,299 deliveries in 2020. During the first quarter of 2022, the subcompact’s volume was 5,801 units, which was a 65.8 percent drop from the 16,955 vehicles in Q1 2021.
A March report claimed that the Buick Encore was scheduled to be discontinued after its 2022 model year, and the claim was correct.
The Buick sold much worse compared to the Trax, as the manufacturer delivered 20,072 Encores in 2021, which is a 51.9 percent drop from 2020. Then for the first quarter of 2022, Buick moved 2,620 Encores, amounting to a 57.9 percent drop from the same period in the previous year.
Chevrolet then promptly updated the Trax SUV for its 2021 model year by bringing out a more advanced 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, with an output of 153 horsepower (114 kilowatts) and 177 lb-ft (240 Newton-meters) of torque. The previous 1.4-L had an output of 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb-ft (201 Nm). These changes included the implementation of direct fuel injection instead of port injections.
The Buick Encore and Chevy Trax were closely related to the European Opel Mokka crossover. Seeing how the Opel is now part of the Stellantis bundle of brands, the latest Mokka vehicle is not correlated with the previous version.
This European competitor is also available in an electric version. The Mokka has a powertrain that amounts to 136 hp (100 kW) and 192 lb-ft (260 Nm) of torque. A 50-kilowatt-hour battery provides 200 miles (322 kilometers) of range, with the top speed coming at 93 miles per hour (150 kilometers per hour).
