Billionaire Jeff Bezos is moving out of Seattle, where he started Amazon over thirty years ago in a garage.

The 59-year-old Bezos revealed plans to move back to Miami, where he attended high school, in an Instagram post on Thursday night in order to be nearer to his parents and fiancee Lauren Sánchez.

Bezos said on social media that activities for his rocket firm, Blue Origin, are “increasingly shifting” to Cape Canaveral, following his resignation as CEO of Amazon, which is still headquartered in Seattle, over three years ago. Cape Canaveral is located roughly 200 miles south of Miami.

“As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me,” Bezos wrote Thursday, adding that he’s lived in Seattle longer than he’s lived anywhere else in the country.

Since he founded Amazon in 1994 out of his garage, Jeff Bezos has made Seattle his home. In Thursday’s Instagram picture, Bezos takes viewers on a quick tour of Amazon’s initial, modest workplace while his father records the footage.

“It doesn’t take long to tour the offices of Amazon-dot-com Inc,” a young Bezos says in the video, pointing to his desk, a fax machine, and a long orange extension cord that was needed to supply the room with additional power.

One of the richest persons on the planet right now, Bezos, has opulent houses in Miami, which have drawn the attention of other prominent figures in the tech industry in recent years. Just two months after acquiring a nearby estate for $68 million, Bezos bought a property in South Florida’s “Billionaire Bunker” for $79 million, according to a Bloomberg News story from last month.

Both residences are located on Miami’s Indian Creek, a posh man-made barrier island. Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump, and her husband Jared Kushner are a few famous neighbors.

Early in 2021, Bezos announced his resignation as CEO of Amazon, claiming his desire to focus more of his time on philanthropy and other endeavors. However, as the company’s largest shareholder and executive chair, Bezos continues to wield significant influence over Amazon.
