In a world of evolving technology and the need to adapt to our surrounding issues, new tech plays an essential role in combating and aiding issues worldwide.
The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed scientists, researchers, and developers all over the world to collaborate and create necessary tools that assist in protecting against the virus in our everyday lives.
A Florida-based wearable tech company, ‘Safe Spacer’, has recently seen a boom in sales for their workplace, social distancing alert devices.
The device is a wearable alert piece that can be worn on a user’s wrist, waistline, or neck. It is intended to alert the wearer when someone is too close (within 2 meters or 6 feet) via light, vibration, and sound cues to allow for proper social distancing.
Along with the social distancing alert, Safe Space wearables feature a unique ID tag and built-in memory that allows individuals to contact trace to a source in the event of exposure to the virus. A valuable tool that is great for large companies with many workers within close proximity of one another.
“We understand the demand is high, so we’re manufacturing these as quickly as we can,” said IK Multimedia Market and Sales Director Dan Boatman. “It’s an industry that’s gone from non-existent to pretty busy in the space of six or nine months.”
The device is made by IK Multimedia in Italy but is rolled out and distributed in Sunrise, Fla.
“We’re working with several very large food manufacturers, beverage manufacturers, a couple of theme park operators,” Boatman said.
Safe Space is currently being tested by 50 companies, and each employee is wearing them according to executives.
The product was initially created to alert the individual that someone else was too close for comfort, but because of the need to locate the source of the spread, increased data storage allows for easier tracing within a company. The amount of data collected and stored, if any at all, is completely up to the company using the devices.
Features of the device include:
- Alerts users if they come within unsafe social distance
- Uses Ultra-wideband, 10x more accurate than Bluetooth®
- Vibration, light and sound alerts
- Wearable on a wristband, belt, lanyard or keychain
- Water-resistant and easy to clean
- IP67 Waterproof version available
- Private and secure – log contacts without sensitive data
- Synchs to a range of systems, from single computer to the cloud
- Future-proof design offers additional uses post-COVID
Although the device is not the only or the first of its kind to help fight against the virus, it provides an extra layer of protection and valuable insight into the spread of the virus just as effective as others on the market.
“We’re really focused on just delivering the absolute best solution that we can,” he said.
It is expected that by the end of November, roughly 10,000 Safe Spacers will be in circulation around the world.
Safe Spacer devices are available for individual purchase or volume purchasing, starting at $99.99.
